Nabil Shaban: A Theatrical Force of Nature
Nabil Shaban, a Jordanian-British actor, writer, and disability rights advocate, has died at the age of 72. He was best known for playing the villain Sil in the 1985 Doctor Who story Vengeance on Varos.
Shaban was born on February 12, 1953, in Amman, Jordan, and was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta, a brittle-bone condition. At the age of three, he was sent to England for specialized medical treatment, which marked the beginning of his journey from a hospital-bound child to a theatrical personality.
He found solace and power in storytelling, drawing from the rich oral traditions of his Jordanian heritage. Shaban studied at the University of Surrey in the late 1970s.
