The Supreme Court has questioned whether it can initiate contempt proceedings against advocate Rakesh Kishore, who attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, after the CJI chose to pardon the act.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard a plea by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) seeking criminal contempt action against Kishore.
“This whole thing is being glorified. The court has sufficient powers to ensure it does not happen again,”
said Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for the SCBA. The Court will consider issuing directions against social media posts glorifying the incident.
