The Sopranos Almost Had a Disastrously Obvious Main Theme Song

The Sopranos' Alternative Theme Song

The Sopranos has a nearly perfect opening title sequence, featuring Tony Soprano driving through New Jersey, set to the soulful techno track "Woke Up This Morning" by Alabama 3.

However, creator David Chase initially considered a different song, one that would have explicitly stated the show's themes, but ultimately would have been a poor choice.

The song in question was by Elvis Costello, an undisputed master of popular music.

Luckily, Chase decided against using the song, opting for the more subtle and fitting "Woke Up This Morning" instead.

The chosen song accompanies Tony as he drives through the Lincoln Tunnel, past various locales, to his McMansion, where he experiences existential crises.
