Iraq War Veteran Survives 13 Weeks in Coma, Amputations, to Inspire Others

Russ Marek, a U.S. Army veteran from Melbourne, Florida, was badly wounded after being hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while serving in Iraq.

Marek spent 13 weeks in a coma at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., trying to recover. He told doctors the only thing he could recall from that fateful day more than 20 years ago was seeing a flash of light.

When he finally regained consciousness, Marek wondered what had happened to his right arm and right leg. His doctors said it was a “blessing you don’t remember” what happened.

The IED also caused burns on nearly a quarter of his body and a serious brain injury. Now, Marek is living life to inspire other veterans battling disabilities and mental health issues.

He's hoping to inspire other veterans facing their own struggles.

Russ Marek went through hell and survived.
