Invasive Plant of the Month: English Ivy

English ivy, also known as Hedera helix, is native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa, and was introduced to Canada in the 1800s as an ornamental plant.

Ontario has 441 known invasive plant species, the most of all the provinces. Invasive plants can have severe consequences, including reducing crop yield, increasing herbicide use, and reducing crop values for farmers.

English ivy can outcompete native vegetation, causing a decline in biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Author's summary: English ivy is a harmful invasive plant species in Canada.
