A UPS cargo plane that crashed in Louisville was identified as a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, manufactured in 1991.
This incident marks the tenth recorded crash of an MD-11 since its introduction in the early 1990s and the first involving a UPS-owned model.
The last documented MD-11 crash occurred 15 years ago when Lufthansa Cargo Flight 8460 crashed upon landing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2010. Both crew members survived that crash.
Experts have noted that the MD-11's smaller tail stabilizer and shifted center of gravity can complicate takeoffs and landings.
Ground video of the recent crash shows the plane on fire as it attempted to take off.
