Ian Fogarty, a Nassau County police officer, was recognized for rescuing two teens caught in a riptide at Cupsogue Beach County Park on July 16.
Fogarty, who was visiting the beach with his family, observed the two 16-year-olds struggling in the current about 100 yards offshore. Using a boogie board, he swam out to the teens and helped them return to shore safely.
“It just looked like it was something that could go wrong very quickly,”
recalled Fogarty, 38. The Nassau County Legislature honored Fogarty for his "selfless valor" and named him "Top Cop" for September.
Fogarty's heroic actions demonstrate his commitment to serving and protecting his community, even when off-duty.
