Spelthorne Borough Council will hold a Service of Remembrance on Tuesday, 11 November, outside the Council Offices in Knowle Green, Staines-upon-Thames. The event honors those who sacrificed their lives serving their country.
This year's ceremony is especially meaningful, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, which signify the conclusion of the Second World War.
Before the event, 429 memorial crosses will be displayed outside the Council Offices. They represent the men and women from Spelthorne who died during World War II.
The names on the crosses were gathered by local military historian Phil Webb and his wife, Eileen Webb, in collaboration with Spelthorne Museum.
"Inspired by the museum’s publication Spelthorne Remembered WW1, which documented local casualties of the First World War, Phil and Eileen aimed to honor those who fell in the Second World War as well."
Their research utilized Spelthorne Museum archives, records from local churches and war memorials, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and Middlesex Chronicle copies held by the museum.
The council welcomes feedback on the event experience, which can be emailed to [email protected].
