‘Death by Lightning’ Review: Michael Shannon Leads a Rollicking Elegy for the American Experiment

‘Death by Lightning’ is a Netflix series that recounts the assassination of James Garfield. The show is powered by a vibrant cast, sharp humor, and insightful storytelling.

Plot and Characters

The story opens late at night outside a noisy bar where the recently nominated Republican Vice President candidate (played by Nick Offerman, renowned for his skillful drunk impersonations) struggles to find a ride home. Wearing two hats stacked atop his head and with eyes squeezed shut, he cannot see the wall ahead.

Meanwhile, Charles Guiteau (portrayed with unsettling charm by Matthew Macfadyen) has spent the evening pestering Arthur. Guiteau persuades Arthur to consider him for a role on his campaign after Arthur once saved Guiteau—whom Arthur mistakenly calls “Cousteau”—from arrest. Guiteau, inspired by James Garfield (Michael Shannon) in Chicago, aspires to “make an impact” like the future president.

To escape his checkered past of thefts, debts, and lies that stretch from Illinois to New York, Guiteau is willing to adopt a new identity.

“If that means going by a different name — one that’s not tied to the thefts, debts, and untold lies he’s sown from Illinois to New York — then a different name he shall have.”
