McIlroy received 'lovely' apology over Ryder Cup abuse

McIlroy Received a Personal Apology After Ryder Cup Abuse

Rory McIlroy revealed that Derek Sprague, the PGA of America CEO, sent him a personal apology for the abuse aimed at him and his wife during Europe's Ryder Cup win in New York.

Ryder Cup Controversy

Europe managed to withstand a strong comeback from the United States at Bethpage Black. The Americans, trailing 12-5 going into the final session, mounted a fierce singles rally but fell short of victory.

Throughout the three days, Luke Donald's team, especially McIlroy, faced unpleasant abuse from a partisan crowd. At one point, a beer thrown from the stands hit McIlroy's wife, Erica.

Apology from PGA Official

McIlroy shared that he received a "lovely letter" from Sprague expressing regret over the incident.

"I got a lovely e-mail from Derek Sprague apologising," McIlroy told BBC Sport ahead of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. "Erica worked with Derek at the PGA of America back in the day, so we know Derek and his wife pretty well. He couldn't have been more gracious or apologetic and he wrote us a lovely letter, which we really appreciated."

Reactions to the Hostile Atmosphere

USA captain Keegan Bradley declined to condemn the "passionate" home fans at Bethpage. McIlroy said the hostile crowd actually motivated the European team.

"I take it as a compliment that they targeted me, but then at the same time, it was a tough week," McIlroy explained. "That made us better as a team. It galvanised us and it really put our arms around each other."

Summary: Derek Sprague's heartfelt apology helped ease tensions after Rory McIlroy and his wife faced abuse during the intense Ryder Cup atmosphere, which ultimately strengthened the European team’s resolve.
