The Philippines’ Alexandra Eala delivered a stunning upset over defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek 7-6, 6-2 on Saturday. Eala is now the first Filipino woman to advance so far in the tournament since it turned professional in 1968. She will face her next opponent on Monday.
Eala kept Swiatek on the back foot with consistent groundstrokes. The 19-year-old forced errors from the Polish star and capitalised on short returns. After each break point win, a Filipino flag waved in the crowd.
