A note forwarded to media outlets on Tuesday says Nancy Guthrie died after being kidnapped.
The message was circulated to BBC, Sky News and additional channels.
Investigators state the note likely came from the kidnapper.
CBS News and Air Mail report that police view the claim with suspicion and remain pursuing the search for Guthrie.
The case remains open as authorities pursue additional data.
